On Monday, a tragic landslide in China’s southwestern Yunnan province buried 44 people from 18 households, as reported by state media. The incident occurred at 5:51 am local time in Zhenxiong County. Authorities launched an emergency response, mobilizing over 200 rescue workers, along with numerous fire engines and equipment. More than 200 people have been urgently evacuated from the affected region.
While the state broadcaster CCTV provided preliminary information on the casualties, the exact number of villagers buried remains unknown, according to state news agency Xinhua. Social media footage shared by a local broadcaster depicted emergency workers, dressed in orange jumpsuits and helmets, sifting through collapsed structures against a backdrop of snow-dusted mountain ranges.
Landslides are unfortunately common in Yunnan, a remote region characterized by steep mountainous terrain adjacent to the Himalayan plateau. The rescue efforts continue to address the immediate aftermath of this devastating event.
