The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) stressed the necessity of establishing trading partnerships in the Bay of Bengal region through efficient Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs). Emphasizing the potential market opportunities and trade advantages in neighboring countries, CPD’s executive director, Dr. Fahmida Khatun, highlighted the need for enhanced connectivity. The seminar, titled “Multilayer Connectivity in the Bay of Bengal: Positioning Bangladesh as an Economic Hub,” jointly organized by CPD and the Embassy of Japan, addressed the untapped potential for trade in the region.
Syed Yusuf Saadat, a research fellow at CPD and the keynote presenter, underscored the elements of efficient RTAs, including a standard preferential tariff structure, rules of origin, streamlined supply chain operations, cross-border trade facilitation, digital trade processes, and a robust dispute resolution mechanism. The unique geographical location of the region was acknowledged as a valuable asset during the event.
