Malaysian Formal Sector Wages Rise by 4.9% in December

The median monthly wages for formal sector employees in Malaysia rose by 4.9 percent year-on-year, reaching 2,900 ringgits (616 U.S. dollars) in December 2023, according to official data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

In a statement released on Friday, DOSM highlighted that the median monthly wages for male formal employees, who make up 55.5 percent of the total formal workforce, were 2,945 ringgits. In contrast, female formal employees, comprising 44.5 percent of the total, received a median monthly wage of 2,845 ringgits.

The age group of 45 to 49 years emerged as the highest earners, with a median monthly wage of 3,927 ringgits in December 2023.

Overall, the number of formal employees in Malaysia reached 6.67 million in December 2023, marking a 1.8 percent increase compared to the same month in the previous year.
