Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advisor on private industry and investment affairs, Salman F Rahman, has urged China to invest in Bangladesh’s technology sector, emphasizing the country’s prioritization of technology under the Smart Bangladesh initiative. Speaking at the “The Rise of Bengal Tiger: Trade and Investment Opportunities Between Bangladesh and China” summit in Beijing on Tuesday, Rahman highlighted the strong and friendly bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China, conducive to investment across various sectors including agriculture, agro-processing, electricity, and electric vehicles. He underscored the potential for Chinese businesses to invest in these areas, benefiting both nations.
Addressing the summit, BSEC Chairman Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam emphasized enhancing commercial ties and mutual cooperation between the two countries. He detailed several incentives for investors in Bangladesh, including tariff exemptions for imports, 100% foreign ownership in 40 countries, dual taxation agreements, bonded warehouse facilities, and full repatriation of capital and profits.
Chairman Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam also noted that both China and Bangladesh have signed MOUs worth over $25 billion for significant projects, inviting Chinese investors to leverage notable opportunities in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her desire to further boost bilateral trade with China, emphasizing the opportune time for Chinese investors to consider investments in Bangladesh. She encouraged Bangladeshi businesses to seek partnerships actively.
Present at the event were Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam, Minister of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak, Minister of Commerce Tipu Munshi, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain Mia, newly appointed ambassadors to the country, various institutional and individual investors, and stakeholders.
