The Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Iwama Kiminori, assured Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus of Japan’s commitment to aiding in the reconstruction of Bangladesh’s economy during a meeting at Yunus’s Jamuna office today.
Following the meeting, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media, revealing that Prof. Yunus had requested increased Japanese assistance to help rebuild Bangladesh’s economy. In response, Ambassador Kiminori affirmed Japan’s willingness to support Yunus’s interim government, drawing parallels between the current challenges faced by Bangladesh and Japan’s situation after World War II.
“The ambassador expressed Japan’s interest in working closely with Bangladesh’s interim government,” Alam stated, adding that Kiminori had congratulated Prof. Yunus on his new role as the chief adviser.
Ambassador Kiminori emphasized the importance of economic cooperation, peace, and strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations. Prof. Yunus, in turn, expressed his inclusive approach to governance, stating, “We are all brothers and sisters. No one is an enemy.”
The discussion also touched on the Rohingya crisis, with the chief adviser stressing that repatriation is the only viable solution. He also called for increased Japanese humanitarian assistance for the displaced Rohingya population, Alam added.
