BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir underscored the crucial role of elections in state reforms during his speech today, 24 August, at a discussion held at the National Press Club. Fakhrul asserted that meaningful reforms can only be achieved through an elected parliament, emphasizing that public participation is essential for genuine change.

“Elections are vital for state reforms,” Fakhrul declared. “I don’t believe a few individuals can reform the state on their own; it must be done with the involvement of the people.”

Fakhrul expressed the BNP’s high expectations for the interim government, describing those currently in charge as competent individuals. He voiced hope that the interim government would facilitate a fair election within a reasonable timeframe, with the chief advisor soon outlining a roadmap for this process.

He also criticized those who supported Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, noting that many of her allies had either fled or gone into hiding. Fakhrul stated, “We do not wish to see those who oppressed the people as Hasina’s accomplices near the advisors of the interim government. Their presence among key figures concerns us.”

Fakhrul pointed out that there has been no substantial, agenda-driven discussion between the new government and political parties. He called for the interim government to engage with political parties to prevent any potential counter-revolution and to ensure that the people’s demands are met swiftly.

“A mechanism for holding elections must be established without delay,” he urged, adding that a new future awaits the nation, free from past burdens.

In addition to addressing political issues, Fakhrul expressed sympathy for flood victims across ten districts, including Cumilla, Feni, and Noakhali. He noted that several people had already lost their lives and hundreds of thousands had been affected by the floods. He called on BNP leaders and workers to stand by those suffering during this difficult time.
