Law Adviser Asif Nazrul today (21 September) urged an end to the practice of using the judiciary to harass individuals, calling on government authorities to ensure justice is upheld. Speaking at an event at the Supreme Court, where Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed addressed lower court judges, Nazrul highlighted past injustices allegedly committed by the judiciary under the “fascist government of Sheikh Hasina.”
He emphasized the need for a judiciary that delivers justice, rejecting the practice of filing cases in absentia. “This interim government does not support harassment through legal means,” Nazrul remarked, stressing that judges should prevent unnecessary harassment of citizens.
Nazrul further noted that the interim government values merit, competence, and integrity, pointing to the appointment of the current chief justice as evidence of this approach.
During the event, Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed revealed plans to establish a separate secretariat for the judiciary to guarantee its independence. “I have sought government assistance to ensure judicial independence, which is why a new secretariat will be formed, operating under the Supreme Court,” he announced.
