Bangladesh’s inflation stood at 8.71 percent in December last year 2022 down from November’s 8.85 percent, according to data provided by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on Monday (4 January)
The inflation rate dropped by 0.14 percentage points from November’s 8.85 percent, said the BBS.
The overall inflation rose to 9.52 percent in August which is the highest in a decade. The rate further declined to 8.91 percent in October and the downward trend continued over the next few months.
In the meantime, the food price index dropped to 7.91 percent in December from November’s 8.14 percent.
Besides, the prices of non-food items dropped to 9.96 percent in December from November’s 9.98 percent.
At the same time, the wage rate index jumped to 7.03 percent in December which was 0.05 percentage points higher than in November.
The growth in wages is 1.68 percentage points lower than the present inflation rate which indicates that the purchasing capacity of the wage earners reduced in the last month.
The BBS report also showed that the average inflation rate of the last 12 months jumped to 7.70 percent and the average inflation during the period was 5.54 percent.
