Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is facing air pollution problems, with its air quality remaining in the ‘unhealthy’ zone this morning. At 9:12 am, the air quality index (AQI) score was 174, which ranked the city second on the list of cities around the world with the worst air quality.

An AQI between 101 and 200 is considered ‘unhealthy’, particularly for sensitive groups. The cities of Delhi in India and Wuhan in China ranked first and third on the list, with AQI scores of 180 and 171, respectively.

In Bangladesh, the AQI is based on five criteria pollutants, including Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and Ozone. Dhaka has been struggling with air pollution issues for a long time. The air quality in the city usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.

An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered ‘poor’, while a reading of 301 to 400 is considered ‘hazardous’ and poses serious health risks to residents. Air pollution consistently ranks among the top risk factors for death and disability worldwide. Several studies have shown that breathing polluted air increases a person’s chances of developing heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, lung infections, and cancer.
