Payra Power Plant Restarts Operations

Payra Power Plant

Payra’s 1,320MW Thermal Power Plant, the largest in the country, has resumed operations with its first unit at Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali coming online early Sunday (June 25). A vessel carrying 41,327 metric tonnes of coal docked at Payra Port on Thursday (June 22), taking two days to unload the shipment. Following the successful unloading, the power plant swiftly resumed production.

Authorities have announced that the second unit of the power plant will recommence operations on July 2. The Payra Thermal Power Plant holds great significance as it is the largest of its kind in the country. However, it experienced a complete shutdown on June 5 due to a scarcity of coal. The interruption in coal supply was a result of outstanding bills amounting to $390 million, caused by a shortage of dollars. Consequently, one unit of the power plant had to halt production on May 25 as the coal suppliers ceased their deliveries.

To address the coal shortage issue, four additional ships transporting coal are scheduled to arrive at Payra during the first week of July, as confirmed by plant officials. The resumption of operations at Payra’s power plant comes as a relief, ensuring a consistent power supply to meet the country’s energy demands.
