Fourteen individuals tragically lost their lives on Saturday (16 September) in a plane crash that occurred in the Brazilian Amazon, specifically in the town of Barcelos, a renowned tourist destination.
Amazonas state Governor Wilson Lima confirmed the fatalities, comprising twelve passengers and two crew members, in a message posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). According to Brazilian media reports, there were no survivors from the crash. While further details were not immediately available from state officials, it was reported that the ill-fated aircraft was an 18-passenger EMB-110, a twin-engine turboprop manufactured by the Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer.
The flight was en route from Manaus, the state capital, to Barcelos, typically a 90-minute journey. Barcelos, situated along the Rio Negro, an Amazon tributary, is surrounded by various national parks and protected areas. News sources have indicated that the passengers were Brazilian individuals traveling to the region for sport fishing, as mentioned by state security secretary Vinicius Almeida.
