Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pledged to further modernize and enhance district and upazila-level hospitals in addition to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) if given the opportunity to serve the nation again. While virtually inaugurating 65 community eye centers across the country, the prime minister expressed her commitment to improving healthcare services, emphasizing the need to upgrade the DMCH into a 4,000 to 5,000-bed hospital with state-of-the-art facilities. She noted that this ambitious plan was delayed due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sheikh Hasina’s government has made substantial strides in the healthcare sector, increasing the capacity of upazila and district hospitals, appointing thousands of nurses and physicians, and expanding community healthcare services. These initiatives are aimed at ensuring that healthcare is accessible to all, in line with the vision of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The prime minister also highlighted the success of community healthcare clinics in reducing child and maternal mortality rates, while criticizing the narrow mindset of the opposition parties who had previously halted such services for political reasons. Additionally, Sheikh Hasina inaugurated several development projects under the Water Resources Ministry and unveiled a book titled “Joyjatra” detailing the development schemes implemented during her tenure.
In summary, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government remains committed to advancing healthcare services, infrastructure, and overall development, despite facing challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
