Today marks the opening of the final 2 stations, Karwan Bazar and Shahbagh, completing the Dhaka metro line 6.
The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd. announced that with this addition, all 16 stations between Diabari and Motijheel are now connected by the MRT-6.
Sharmin Rahman, a private job holder commuting to Banglamotor, expressed relief, stating that she can now conveniently cover the remaining distance on foot after getting off at either Karwan Bazar or Shahbagh station, eliminating the need to switch transport modes at Farmgate station.
At a news briefing on Thursday, MAN Siddique, the managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company, disclosed plans to extend the service hours of the Agargaon-Motijheel train starting March. Currently operating from 8 am to 12:30 pm, the extension aims to accommodate more commuters.
The metro, which currently sees 1.30 to 1.50 lakh daily commuters, has proven to be a significant transportation solution for Dhaka residents. Siddique also highlighted a safety measure, mentioning a letter sent to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, urging a ban on sky lanterns within a 1km radius of the metro rail on New Year’s Eve to prevent any untoward incidents during festivities.
The Dhaka Mass Transit Company initiated operations at Dhaka University and Bijoy Sarani stations on December 13, following the inauguration of the second phase of the Agargaon to Motijheel segment on November 4 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Currently, the Uttara-Motijheel route operates daily from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, with additional early morning trains for students and professionals. The metro rail movement ceases on the Motijheel-Agargaon route after 11:30 am, while it remains operational until 8:30 pm on the Uttara-Agargaon section.
