The cost of onions in Dhaka witnessed a notable decline of Tk30 per kg on Tuesday, driven by an uptick in supply from key production hubs such as Pabna and Faridpur.
Wholesalers and retailers operating in areas like Malibagh, Moghbazar, Karwan Bazar, and Shyambazar reported a surge in onion availability following the onset of the onion harvesting season. Consequently, wholesale prices ranged from Tk45 to Tk55 per kg. Retail markets reflected this trend with prices averaging between Tk60 and Tk70 per kg, marking a significant decrease from the Tk90 to Tk100 range observed just a week prior.
Haji Mukarram, a seasoned onion trader at Karwan Bazar, attributed the drop in prices to the swift response of farmers to news of imported onions arriving from India, prompting them to expedite sales. Narayan Saha, a trader and importer based in Shyambazar, acknowledged the timely arrival of seasonal onions in the market, influencing the prevailing price dynamics. He stressed the importance of prioritizing proper harvesting techniques and storage methods to ensure a stable market price moving forward. Effective storage practices, according to Narayan, would contribute to maintaining price stability throughout the remainder of the year, obviating the need for onion imports to support local farmers.
