Swedish Minister Affirms Commitment to Bangladesh Partnership

Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell has affirmed Sweden’s unwavering commitment as a partner to Bangladesh. He emphasized the potential for increased participation of Swedish companies in Bangladesh, as stated in a media release issued by the Swedish Embassy.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, serving as UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, joined Minister Forssell and UNDP Assistant Secretary General Ulrika Modéer during their recent four-day visit to Bangladesh. Throughout the visit, the delegation held constructive meetings with government representatives, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud. They also engaged with civil society, youth, and various stakeholders to gather perspectives on sustainable development in Bangladesh and its future challenges and opportunities.

The delegation traveled to southern Bangladesh, where they witnessed the impact of climate change and UNDP’s efforts to promote resilience, particularly among women and youth. In Chattogram, they observed UNDP’s urban resilience program and visited the Asian University for Women. The delegation also visited the Rohingya Refugee Camp in Cox’s Bazar, where they witnessed collaborative efforts by multiple UN agencies, many of which are supported by Sweden. Minister Forssell highlighted Sweden’s plans to increase humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh in 2024, particularly focusing on addressing the urgent needs of Rohingya refugees.

Additionally, the delegation discussed the role of the private sector in Bangladesh’s green transition, engaging with major Swedish and international companies active in sustainable development initiatives within the country.
