Mainul Islam Named New IGP, Replaces Mamun

Md Mainul Islam has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Bangladesh Police, succeeding Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.

The government terminated former IGP Mamun’s contractual appointment late last night, as per a notification from the Ministry of Public Administration.

In an interview with The Business Standard following his appointment, IGP Mainul described the student movement as the “second liberation.”

“We [the police] require everyone’s support during this critical period,” he stated.

He further expressed his deep condolences for the victims of the recent violence, including the police officers, and emphasized the need to swiftly overcome the situation.

On Tuesday (6 August), the Home Ministry’s Deputy Secretary Md Mahbubur Rahman Sheikh issued an order appointing Mainul as IGP, following the president’s directive.

Hailing from Panchagargh, Mainul was previously the commandant of the Traffic and Driving School (TDS) in Dhaka.

Before that, he served as the deputy inspector general of the Police Training Centre in Tangail. Mainul began his career in the Bangladesh Police on 20 January 1991, joining through the 12th Bangladesh Civil Service.

He recently received a supernumerary promotion to additional inspector general of police from deputy inspector general.
