Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has announced his decision to resign from his position. He plans to meet with President Mohammed Shahabuddin this evening.
Earlier today, the Supreme Court’s full court meeting was canceled after students issued a two-hour ultimatum demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice and other justices of the Appellate Division. The ultimatum was delivered at 11 am by Hasnat Abdullah, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who called for the resignations by 1 pm.
In a demonstration, students marched toward the High Court premises, demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice and other justices perceived as loyal to the Awami League, as well as a restructuring of the judiciary. The movement’s leaders urged students from across the country to join them in their protest.
Asif Mahmud, Youth and Sports Adviser in the interim government, posted a statement on Facebook, saying, “The Chief Justice, who is aligned with the fascist regime, called a full court meeting without consulting the government.
“We will not tolerate any conspiracy. We had already called for his resignation, and we will take strict action if the CJ attempts to incite further unrest.”
