A murder case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others, including the Awami League General Secretary and former Home Minister, at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. The case, registered on 13 August, was brought before Justice Rajesh Chowdhury, who took it under cognizance.
The plaintiff, Amir Hamza Shatil, a resident of Mohammadpur, filed the case concerning the death of grocery shop owner Abu Sayeed, who was fatally shot by police on 19 July in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka during a procession supporting the quota movement.
The court has accepted the plaintiff’s statement and reserved the matter for a future ruling. Alongside Sheikh Hasina, those implicated in the case include AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdullah Al Mamun, DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Additional IGP Harun-or-Rashid, and Additional Joint Police Commissioner Biplab Kumar.
A police official stated that the case was filed as a complaint register (CR) case at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, rather than at the Mohammadpur police station. This means that the police will not immediately receive a copy, and it remains unclear which agency will be tasked with the investigation. The court has directed the police to register the case as a First Information Report (FIR).
The incident in question occurred on 19 July at 4:00 pm at the Bosila 40 Feet intersection under the Mohammadpur police station, where Abu Sayeed was killed by police gunfire.
