Hasina, 21 Others Face Charges over killing of City University student

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 21 others have been charged in connection with the killing of City University student Md Sazzad Hossain Sajal during the recent Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The charges were filed today (28 August) by Sajal’s older brother, Mijanur Rahman, in the Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman’s court. The court has instructed Ashulia Police Station to register the complaint as a First Information Report (FIR).

Prominent figures named in the case include Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Abdullah Al Mamun, Harun Or Rashid, Biplab Kumar, and Habibur Rahman.

According to the case documents, on 5 August, hundreds of students held a procession in the Baipail area in support of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The police, aiming to suppress the movement, fired on the procession and arrested several students, including Sajal. He was allegedly shot and killed inside the police station, and his body, along with the bodies of 7-8 other students, was reportedly burned in an attempt to destroy evidence.
