Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the Speaker of the recently dissolved parliament, has resigned from her position. She submitted her resignation letter to President Mohammad Shahabuddin on 2 September, according to sources at the Bangabhaban.

Shirin’s resignation comes 27 days after the resignation and subsequent fleeing of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August. Shirin had held the position of Speaker since 30 April 2013, maintaining an uninterrupted tenure until her recent resignation.

She was first elected as a Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency in the 2014 national elections.

In the midst of a series of legal actions against politicians associated with the Awami League, Shirin has also become embroiled in legal troubles. On 27 August, she was implicated in a murder case related to the death of a jewelry worker named Muslim Uddin in Rangpur during recent protests. The case was filed by Muslim Uddin’s wife, Dilruba Akter, with the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court, naming Shirin and 16 others as accused.

Former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi is currently in prison in connection with the same case.
