According to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) data, Dhaka has relinquished its position as the world’s most polluted city. With an AQI score of 93 recorded at 9:11 am on Saturday, Dhaka now ranks 15th on the list of cities with the poorest air quality.
An AQI ranging from 50 to 100 is classified as ‘moderate’, indicating an acceptable level of air quality. However, individuals who are particularly sensitive to air pollution may experience moderate health concerns, although this is a small minority.
Occupying the top three spots on the list are Qatar’s Doha, the United Arab Emirates’ Dubai, and Pakistan’s Lahore, with AQI scores of 181, 173, and 129, respectively. An AQI reading between 101 and 200 is categorized as ‘unhealthy’, especially for vulnerable groups. Similarly, an AQI ranging from 201 to 300 is labeled ‘poor’, while a reading of 301 to 400 is classified as ‘hazardous’, posing severe health risks to residents.
Dhaka’s improved air quality is a positive development, reflecting efforts made to address pollution concerns. However, continuous efforts are required to maintain and further improve the air quality in the city, ensuring the well-being of its residents and the environment.
