Hundreds of traders at Dhaka’s Mohammadpur Krishi Market are grappling with the devastating loss of goods worth millions of taka in a massive fire. The incident occurred during the market’s weekly holiday, with traders returning to find their shops and merchandise consumed by the flames.
Saiful Islam Sharif, a market trader, expressed his dismay, stating that his two shops, one owned and the other rented, were reduced to ashes. His shops contained clothing valued at Tk one crore, and he also lost Tk 6 lakh kept in the cash box.
The fire erupted around 3:43 am and quickly spread, requiring the efforts of seventeen firefighting units to bring it under control by 9:25 am. However, smoke continues to billow from the site, hampering firefighting operations.
Fortunately, there were no reported casualties at the time of this report. The market, which housed 500 shops, received assistance from various agencies, including WASA, the Bangladesh Air Force, Army, Navy, BGB, and police.
