BSEC Chief Re-elected Vice-Chair of IOSCO’s Asia Pacific Regional Committee
The Chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam, has been re-elected as the vice-chair of the Asia Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) within the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). IOSCO, founded in 1983, serves as an international body for securities regulators, focusing on the development, implementation, and promotion of globally recognized standards for securities regulation.
In this second consecutive unopposed re-election, Shibli will hold the position for the 2024–26 term and will also represent Bangladesh on the IOSCO board, as stated in a BSEC press release. His official duties will commence in May during the annual IOSCO conference scheduled to take place in Greece.
Confirmation of Shibli’s re-election was received by the BSEC through an email from IOSCO General Secretary Martin Moloney, according to the press release issued on Tuesday. The announcement noted that Bangladesh’s position within IOSCO will be beneficial for the country and its capital market.
This marks Bangladesh’s second consecutive term achieving such a prominent position within an international organization comprising regulatory agencies from around the globe. The APRC, one of IOSCO’s four regional committees, specifically addresses regional matters related to securities regulation in the Asia-Pacific region.
The current Chair of the APRC is Shigeru Ariizumi, the vice minister for international affairs of the Financial Services Agency of Japan, as per information available on the IOSCO website. As of now, IOSCO boasts a membership of 233 regulatory bodies.
The BSEC has maintained its status as a member of IOSCO’s highest standard ‘A’ category since 2013.
